Understanding Cigar Wrappers

The wrapper is the outermost tobacco leaf of a cigar—and the part your customer sees first. Its color, texture, sheen, and overall appearance contribute immediately to the impression of the cigar and the brand behind it. But a wrapper is much more than decoration. It also contributes to aroma, flavor, combustion, and the overall smoking experience. For this reason, choosing a wrapper is an important part of developing a premium cigar. However, there is one principle worth understanding from the beginning: The wrapper is part of the blend. It is not the blend. A beautiful wrapper cannot compensate for an unsuitable binder or filler combination, and wrapper color alone does not tell you whether a cigar will be mild, medium, or strong. The objective is therefore not simply to choose an attractive wrapper. It is to select one that works in harmony with the complete cigar.
